Scott and Mark in heated competition!
How It Started Last year, (2005) upon moving into our new home, Susan and I met our neighbor Scott and his lovely wife Nancy. During our conversations Scott and I had determined that we both shared a similar interest in the RC World. Like most men, we established that starting out small and working our way up was the best way to learn. So one sunny afternoon we loaded up our battery-powered remote control airplanes and headed to the nearest park. We soon learned between short battery life, high winds, and radio interference, that our outing turned out to be more frustrating than fun. That’s when I decided to introduce Scott to my latest toy, the Victoria Class RC Sailboat. Scott, not knowing anything about sailing, was hesitant at first. Once I had the boat in the water and demonstrated the performance of the boat, Scott realized the simplicity of sailing. We started to discuss what possibilities may lay ahead. IE: Course Setup, Competitive Racing, and Scott’s favorite; Bragging Rights. Several days later, Scott ended up in my garage building his Victoria Class Sailboat. Because I had built a boat previously, I was able to show Scott a few short-cuts and upgrades to enhance the performance and reliability. Of course I had to put the brakes on when he started talking about installing the MK2 Torpedoes! I think I used the excuse that they were “not allowed according to the rules”. Soon after a few coats of paint and several few choice words to get the knots right, Scott and I headed back to our favorite park. I had ingeniously created a method to put retrievable markers in the lake. We set up some lounge chairs under a shady oak tree and pulled out a few cold beverages from a cooler. From that time the race was on! Of course I had to show Scott the finer points of sailing, but soon after Scott was on his way to creating a sizable wake. And thus began Sunday Sloopers! Needless to say, Susan and Nancy have not become part of this endeavor as of yet.
Today
From our humble beginning our club has grown to fleet of seven committed boats and four additional snowbirds are soon to arrive. We are now a recognized fleet by the AMYA and our By-Laws about to be approved. Of course, our website is up and our new sailors are improving every week. Though out this growth we've been able to maintain our philosophy of fun but competitive sailing.
The Future
Through this website and with the help of our sponsors we believe that we are on a path of even more growth and good commeraderie. As we are open to boats of all classes we hope to provide a home for sailors who seek a place where they can enjoy their sport and sail with great people. How far we go will depend on our continious hard work and the belief that our club is a desireable place to join in.
Special Thanks
A Special thanks to Darrell Krasoski for his unselfish dedication of his personal time and resources. With his leadership through example and suggestion, has taken an idea and made it a reality.
